Microeconomia

Equação de Slutsky

• Efeito Substituição: o aumento do preço do bem 1 faz com que o bem 2 se torne mais atractivo, dado que o seu preço relativo diminui; logo, o consumidor vai tender a consumir mais do bem 2 e menos do bem 1;
• Efeito Rendimento: o aumento do preço do bem 1 faz com que o rendimento relativo do consumidor diminua, isto é, com que diminua o seu poder de compra; logo, o consumidor vai, normalmente, tender a consumir menos do bem 1, sendo o bem 1 um bem que responde positivamente a variações no rendimento;

Férias

Uma semana depois de ter feito 20 anos, chega uma semana de descanso bem merecida. Férias são boas e fazem falta em maior número.

E com isto desaparece o inglês que hoje não me estava a apetecer.

Lost - Best TV Show Ever

If there's something I'm really a "fan" of, it is this thing that is Lost. It's much more than a tv show:

Shutter Island

Two weeks ago, I said that some things are just bad and nothing can really saves them. Well, this week I come a bit more positive. Some things are GREAT.

Shutter Island is a movie everyone should go through the experience of seeing. It's pretty intense, from the beggining until the very end, but you are totally sucked into it, up to a poin in which you can't really know if you're just a viewer sitting on your chair in the cinema or you're a patient on the damn island. Martin Scorsese were at his best. Also, Leonardo Dicaprio was never an actor I've really appreciated, even though I didn't dislike him either, he was just meh, and I think he over-acted a bit in some movies. But here, he was suberb, totally believable and certainly one of the main ingredients for the show's intensity. One of the best movies I have seen.

State of Nation

One more week that goes on. Portugal is still a deeply disturbed country, where the most shocking thing is the lack of shock of this country.

Newspapers highlight that this guy or that guy did that thing and that this big scandal is going on and you think "it's bad" but you are not shocked.

And that's shocking! The lack of shock is shocking. But it's what happens. And so one more week goes on. And on.

Percy Jackson

There are plenty of adjectives to describe things in a negative way. Awful, terrible,yabominable, atrocious, horrid, poor, deplorable, lamentable, etc etc etc. But some things are just pain bad.

This movie that I saw yesterday. The Percy Jackson thing. What the hell was that? The acting was some of the more mediocre I’ve seen recently and the whole direction of the movie is simply BAD! Moreover, the characters are not well built and that totally ruins a story for me. How am I supposed to believe that a boy cares about the things he’s learning just after he found out his mother supposedely died? So many reused cliches! But cliches aren’t bad, as long as they don’t feel reused. And these ones? They felt like reusing the reused! Pretty bad! The worst thing is, it was na adaptation from a book, and I could amost bet that there’s a good book behind it! I mean, I liked Harry Potter and it was not because of the movies. I think the movie characters have a total lack of justified motivations and that things are explained well enough. So, probably this was just that. A bad adaptation! And that sucks, now I’ll never be interested in reading that book, which is probably good, since the plot in itself had potential! What is it? BAD!

Facebook, Privacy and Relationships - A New Paradigma

So, this week we were asked to come up with an original topic for a work to be presented on the Ethics class and we pick Facebook and the way its use is changing relationships and privacy nowadays.

We started by doing a simple video (comic one though) about it; please bear in mind that I'm far from being an expert at video editing, as well as in acting, so it's pretty amateur:

We did that small sketch about the gal who is expelled from college because of facebook activity and even though we presented it in a comic style, truth is, reality is not far.
Students have been expelled from college due to stuff like joining groups (Brown University for example) and have had curricular mentions due to facebook photos of them involving alchool consumption. On the business world, TAP's pilots were invited to attend an ethic course after being caught on facebook saying not-so-nice stuff about their colleagues and bosses. Furthermore, British Airways employees were fired after some facebook conversations of them insulting their clientes came to light.

So the big question is: is it fair? I mean, I personally believe that what one does on its privacy can not be used against him. I'm perfectly free to arrive home or a cafe and start complaing about a teacher. What I'm not free to do is tell him not so nice stuff. That's the way I see it. And facebook? It's a problem, because it's not defined if it's the cafe or its face we're talking about. So it's not clear if we're free to do it or not. I can't really find it fair that employees are fired because of what happens that but in a real discussion, I am not able to fundament this position, so I guess it's a weak one.

No matter what I think, the truth is that it is undeniable that the way users adopted Facebook is changing relationships, companies etc etc etc. Only time will tell what new paradigma of privacy have we put ourselves into.

The Beginning

The wise wikipedia defines a blog as a type of website, usually maintained by an individual, with regular entries of commentary, descriptions of events, or other material such as graphics or video.

I’m not exactly sure what this blog is going to be. As in everything else, I guess the trick is just figuring out as we go on. Maybe one day is about this movie. Maybe one day is about that song. Maybe one day I feel like talking about my life. Maybe one day I feel like criticizing the world. Maybe one day I’ll expose my personal issues. Maybe one day I’ll just praise this tv show that I love. Or maybe you’ll realize that I will just say stupid stuff on that day.

It’s not clear for me if this will happen in English or Portuguese. There’s this huge English exam coming at the end of the year, so I thought it might be good to do it in English. But moods change, and so does my willingness to do what’s better on the long run.

Oh, I didn’t present myself. I’m 19, almost 20, I’m a guy, I live in Portugal and I study economics. The rest, you’ll probably figure it out by reading it. Or not, depending on what I choose to publish!

All for now!
